Happiness

Happiness

A plump rosy-cheeked man
Stood alone in the street
He wore a red coat
And had shiny shoes on his feet.

In his arms was a box
Labeled ‘HAPPINESS’ in bold print
It was all gold and glittery
In sunlight it would make you squint.

The street was empty and quiet,
The air had a slight chill,
Suddenly a car sped right past him,
Then brakes squealed as it came to a standstill.

The car reversed backwards
All the way to where the man stood
A woman in high heels got out
As quickly as she could.

Her eyes were wide with desire,
“I must have that box”, she told the man
She became so flustered waiting for his answer
That she had to pull out a little pocket fan.

She held out a handful of shiny gold coins
As he ‘ummed’ and ‘ahhhhed’
Finally he came to a decision
And shook his head hard.

The woman begged and she pleaded
She even bribed him with her antique shawl,
But still he resolutely refused her
The one thing she wanted above all.

When at long last she gave up
Got into her shiny car and drove away,
The plump man wondered
If indeed he should stay.

Then, with sound of the engine
Not too long gone
He noticed a young girl
Just strolling along.

Her feet were bare
There was no one at her side
He called out in a loud voice, “Yoo hoo!”
She looked up, innocent and blue eyed.

With one finger he beckoned her over
And offered her the box,
But when she politely declined he was flummoxed
And looked down at his socks.

Never before had this happened
Looking up again he asked, “Can you not read?”
Pleasantly she smiled and told him
“I can sir, but that’s something I don’t need”.

He was taken aback
And didn’t know how to respond
Perhaps the child simply didn’t understand
So naive and so blonde.

As she skipped off she turned and called out
“I have it already, I make it myself, you see”
And in that moment he thought that perhaps
The one who didn’t understand was he.

Home

Home
You are one of the very few people
In this big crazy world
Who knows me
Almost better than I know myself.
I can do or say anything in front of you
And not feel the slightest bit silly,
You know what I need
And how I’m feeling
Without me having to say a word.
Even after months apart
When I look into your familiar face
I remember every freckle,
I can almost see your thoughts
As you think them,
There is no distance between us,
Everything is just the same
As it was
The last time we saw each other.
Our connection withstands
Time, distance, circumstances;
No matter what happens
Or where we are
I know that when I am with you

I am home.

Perfection?

Perfection?
I watch her walk towards me
Her blonde plait bobbing slightly
Not a hair out of place.
She smiles and stops
I notice an envelope in her hands
Her exam results no doubt,
With – I’d be willing to bet –
A+ marks
On each page.
“How are you?” she asks
In her butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-my-mouth voice.
“I’m okay, just off to get my exam marks”
I feel my skin involuntarily bristling
The way it does every time she talks to me
And I try not to let myself be annoyed;
What is it about her?
“Oh, well, good luck!”
She smiles sweetly at me.
There’s an awkward pause
Like she’s expecting me to ask how she did.
I don’t think I can bear
Hearing about her coming top of the class
So I force a smile and mumble something
Before continuing hurriedly on my way.
As I walk
I notice my jaw is clenched
What is it about her?
I wonder
As a dark cloud
Seems to settle over me
And I stride more quickly
Head down, deep in thought.
Everything about her
I realize
Is perfect;
Her hair and make-up
Always immaculate
Never unsure of what to say
In any situation,
Pretty, confident, friendly, intelligent,
Plays the piano like Beethoven himself
And sings like a nightingale …
Lead cheerleader
And captain of the volleyball team;
I can’t remember a year
Where she hasn’t been prom queen …
I could go on.
Am I jealous?
I wonder.
Maybe I am.
But what’s wrong with that?
I’m not perfect
Infact, I’m anything but.
Does that make me a worse person?
Or simply
More interesting?
Perhaps I don’t even want to be perfect;
Perhaps perfect is too boring,
Too predictable?
So what if I get a C minus in biology
And a B in physics?
Who really cares
If I can’t dance to save myself
If my family is dysfunctional
And I spend all my savings
On clothes and coffee?
Well,
I’ve decided,

I don’t.

Never Again

Sensing Life
If I was dead
I would never again
Smell the freshness
Of light rain
Mingling with the morning air;
I would never again
Feel the glorious sensation
Of sand
Between my toes;
I would never again
Hear your voice
Like cool water
Flowing down
My parched dry throat;
I would never again
Taste the sweetness
Of plump juicy berries
Still warm from the sun;
I would never again
See the sun set on the horizon
Painting the sky
In glorious shades
Of pinky-orangey-yellow …
If I had not made the decision
To listen to that barely existent
Oh so quiet voice
In the stillness of my soul
I would never again

Be.
