Change
Scary - exciting - unknown
Invigorating - refreshing - renewing
Unsettling - unfamiliar - natural
An inescapable
Ubiquitous part of life
Providing the background
Hum and rhythm
Of the world.
Lush green leaves turn orange
And then gold
Babies are born
People die
Children grow up
Milestones are reached
Houses are built
Fences torn down
The tides rise and fall
Raging waves crash
Then morph into fizzy bubbles
On the grey sand
Disappear into soft white foam
And then
nothingness.
The daphne flowers in the garden
Drop their petals and die,
While the apricot tree on the patio
Sprouts bright green leaves
Next to the cherry tree
Covered in white confetti blossom.
No two days
No two moments
No two people
Are the same
Or stay the same.
The sun crawls across the sky
And eventually
Disappears
Leaving streaks of pink and gold
On the horizon
Before darkness settles over the land
Like a blanket.
I change my track pants for shorts,
My school uniform for
A freshly pressed work blouse,
My jeans for a wedding gown,
My skirt for a maternity dress …
A stagnant life
Is like an unmoving pond
Weed and algae
Covers the surface
Until one can no longer see
The water beneath.
Will my life
Be like the pond?
Resisting change
Cultivating a protective cloak?
It’s up to me.
