Searching #2

Joy

Everyone wants it
Yet so many continually search
But fail to find it
Even though it’s right there
Infront of our noses.
Why do we miss it?
Because we look for it
In the extraordinary,
Thinking to ourselves
That if others are walking around
Living ‘ordinary’ lives
Without a spring in their step
It must be found
In the extraordinary?
Is it this
That clouds our vision,
Keeps us looking up,
Down,
Every which way
Instead of right here and now
At what is in this
Present moment?
For I think that really
Joy
It far more abundant
Than we realise.
In fact,
Do we become desensitised to it
Because it is so ubiquitous?
For like a fish
Who doesn’t notice the water
He swims in
Or like the way
We breathe
Without considering the air
Do we miss the joy
 Simply because it is
In the small things
All around us;
The ordinary moments
That once upon a time
Through our child-like perception
Seemed so miraculous
And wonderful?
Sure,
Joy is not a constant.
It is like twinkling lights
Little flashes
On and off
Here and there;
If it were a floodlight
We would be even more likely
To miss it
Perhaps to the point
Where we would argue
the very question
of it’s existence?
How do I stay awake
And not miss
The bursts of joy
The twinkles
That flash in front of my eyes?
A blossoming apple tree in the yard,
The first sprout of a seedlng,
Shared family meals,
A kitten on my lap,
Jumping on the trampoline,
A smile from a stranger,
A tight hug,
Stepping into a warm shower,
Placing my head on a soft pillow
At the end of a busy day …
I think
The key lies in being present
In choosing to look at life
With an child-like innocence
With freshness,
Gratitude

Simplicity.
