Self Awareness

Self Awareness
The hardest times are
wintery days when the clouds cover the sun
When I sit for too long
When I can’t remember the last time I had fun;
In the afternoons my anxiety rises,
When I feel out of control
Or there are unwelcome surprises;
When I have to make decisions,
And get stuck in my head,
When I shut myself off from others
When I don’t live in the present but ruminate instead.
These are some of the times
I need to take extra special care
To be gentle and kind to myself
Because anorexia’s voice is near.

But on the opposite side
There are things that make anorexia fade;
Connecting with people I love,
Laughter, jokes, seeing a difference I’ve made,
Staying close to God
Spending time in prayer,
Yoga, mindfulness, living in the moment,
Being in the outdoors and fresh air;
Creativity, reading, writing
Having time just for me,
Animals, hot showers, music,
Slow breathing and mugs of tea;
Looking after my body,
Contributing, doing something well,
These are the things

That make the ‘Kas’ side of me swell.
