A House Built
on the Sand
Like building a house
It is up to each one of us
To establish the type of foundation
On which we construct our lives.
What we choose
Is of no small matter
Our foundation will determine
Our resilience and strength
In the face of the inescapable storms
That rise up against us without fail
Battering, raging, assaulting;
Our foundation
Makes the difference
Between whether we crumble
Or stand firm
Amidst these hurricanes of life.
So many choose to build their house
In the sand;
Walls and roof quickly taking shape
French doors opening out
Onto a breathtaking seaside vista.
Yet,
When the sky darkens
And the thunder and lightening
Rumbles and flashes,
When the waves pound angrily on the
shore
Their sandy foundation
Gives way
Slipping into the vice-like grip
Of the elements,
The house crumbles
Like a sandcastle
Washed away by the tide.
Yet others
Take the time to select and establish
A sturdy foundation
On which to build their home;
A solid eternal foundation
That will never give way
It will not yield
To raging earthly elements.
As for my own house,
I've spent almost a lifetime
Building up an illusory foundation
Reliant on my own strength and resources
Doing it my way;
I see now
That all I too have been doing
Is joining the neighbourhood
In the sand
When all the while God has been right there
Ready and waiting
With an eternal foundation
More secure and lasting
Than any I could possibly dream of.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing
And I kick myself now
As I see my wasted efforts
Washed away by the tide
Until nothing but a shingly beach
remains
No sign I’d ever been there
Not even a footprint.
And all I had to do
Was to build my house
Solely and completely
With him
Instead of on the sand.
