Extra Ordinary

What is God's call on your life?
When Jesus began his mission he chose twelve men to be his friends and apostles. In the choice of the twelve, we see a characteristic feature of God's work - Jesus chose very ordinary people. They were non-professionals who had no wealth or position. They were chosen from the common people who did ordinary things, had no special education, and no social advantages. Jesus wanted ordinary people who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily well. He chose these men, not for what they were, but for what they would become under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not shrug back because we think that we have little or nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Is there anything holding you back from giving yourself wholeheartedly to God?

"Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Inflame my heart with a burning love for you and with an expectant faith in your saving power. Take my life and all that I have as an offering of love for you, who are my All."

Extra-Ordinary
Let go
Of the need to be powerful
Recognised, ‘special’;
Let go
Of the quest for wealth,
Possessions and prizes;
Let go
Of the wish
To be flown in first class
Seated at the head of the table.
For these things
Bring a satisfaction
That is merely
On an earthly level –
Untimately unfulfilling
Passing, temporal.
Don’t be afraid
To embrace the ordinary
To take public transport
Be a part of the world
That walks along
Litter strewn streets
In common brown sandals;
Don’t shy away
From being someone
Who talks to the funny old woman
Outside the corner dairy
Rather than turning the other way;
Don’t be scared
Of those cold dull days
Where life seems to swallow you up
In it’s mundane-ness
And everything seems
Ugly, hopeless,
Hollow.
For it is in the ordinary
That we have been planted,
In the day-to-day normality
That we live our lives;
Remember,
Jesus was born
In a small dark stable
He walked down dusty roads
In sandals,
He was taunted and laughed at
Scorned and rejected.
It is when we see the world
With child-like eyes
That we notice again
The wonder of it all;
It is when we live simply
And openly
Placing our ordinary-ness
Humbly at God’s feet
Offering him our weakness
That we allow ourselves
To be
A different kind

Of extra-ordinary.
